       How to maximize savings?

A team approach to cost reduction services is essential.  All parties must work together to achieve a common set of goals.  When a vendor attempts to circumvent the negotiating process costs saving solutions are in jeopardy.  When all parties involved are on the same page the results are dramatic and the savings achieved is maximized.

Management must encourage all parties to work together.  It must be clear to all that savings is a group project and that no one will be blamed if the savings are dramatic.  The mission must be to do what is best for the company and "protecting turf" must be eliminated.   

It must be made very clear that employees will benefit in many ways.  First, cooperation will help improve profitability.  Second, upper management should work with employees and those that cooperate and achieve the biggest savings should be rewarded.  Third, any time a company improves profitability job stability is improved.  Forth, corporate culture should be advanced to work to save money and improve productivity.  This benefits all.

How cost savings opportunities are missed?

When staff reduction takes place employee stress increases.  It becomes difficult to accomplish the many tasks that are required today to accomplish critical functions.

When a vendor is adequate it is easier to continue to use that vendor.  In order to achieve the best possible pricing other vendors must be interviewed and all available information must be analyzed to determine the quality and worth of the specific vendor being reviewed.

If the vendor feels that replacement is a possibility the vendor will usually help the company reduce costs.  If asked the vendor will supply a proposal to reduce costs and/or will make suggestions that will improve efficiency.

However, if the vendor is protected and feels that his position is assured the savings will not occur.

In order not to miss a cost reduction opportunity a company must develop an environment that encourages cost reductions and does not allow vendors to become complacent. 

Bringing in an outside cost reduction group enables the staff to maintain their working relationship with the vendor while the outsider can create the cost saving environment.

Information, strategy, experience will yield the most savings.  Savings missed is savings lost forever.
