U.S. Companies that launched Internet operations have seen an estimated cumulative cost savings of $163.5 billion and pushed the country's productivity to almost double the historic rate. | ||
Ameritech
We are pleased to report that some improvement has been noted at Ameritech. Persistence and knowing what you want to accomplish has recently been responsible for successful and timely service order completions. In fact, we ordered a new phone line to be installed and to our surprise the order date was for the next day. We had to move the installation date two days into the future since the next day installation by Ameritech would not have given the manager enough time to have someone at the new site. Improvement in service by Ameritech is much appreciated.
Will Cable Take Over Local Loops and Voice Traffic?
The number of DSL lines has surpassed the number of high speed cable subscribers. Cable for TV and Internet access is very satisfactory. However, the amount of investment needed by the Cable companies and the collapse of the Stock Market has make it nearly impossible for Cable companies to raise enough money to upgrade their networks to be able to take over the local loop functions.
The Baby Bells had over 100 years and monopoly income available to them. This enabled the Bells to develop the quality of local loops and the infrastructure necessary to handle the quality of voice traffic we have become accustomed to.
Adelphia the sixth biggest cable company failed to file financial reports and finally has filed bankruptcy. NASDAQ de-listed Adelphia. There are many other problems with Adelphia. Why is this important? This is the first sign of major cracks in the cable industry and the first major cable company to tumble. Investor confidence and profits have been smashed. Therefore it is now even more difficult to raise money. Optimism on future projects is so limited that AT&T's dream and other Cable company dreams are beyond their financial abilities.
QUALITY OF CARRIER'S SERVICE
Carriers will make the statement that the quality of their service is better than their competitors. This illusion has enabled carriers to convince some people that different long distance carriers offer different types of quality. In a very few cases, this may be true. However, it is so common that long distance companies, including AT&T, Sprint and Worldcom as well as 100's of lesser-known Long Distance companies use the same fiber networks which will yield the same quality.
INFOWORLD
Just last month, Chad Dickerson the Infoworld CTO, learned that the reseller for all of his DSL services has not been paying the backend provider on time, so service was shut down for two branch offices and many home offices. Meanwhile, his Web hosting provider filed for bankruptcy. To top it all off, the data center that delivers WAN connectivity to their headquarters notified Infoworld that it was closing. In short, every wire connecting Infoworld facilities to each other and to the outside world is connected to a company that is in severe financial distress at this moment.
Backup and alternative routing patterns and carriers for critical data, is essential.
